Throughout history, the pearl, has been one of the most highly sought after possessions.  The ancient Egyptians prized pearls so much they were buried with them.

In Rome, pearls were the ultimate symbol of wealth and social standing.   Until the early 1900's natural pearls were accessible only to the rich and famous.  In 1916, the French Jeweler, Cartier bought his store on New York's famous Fifth Avenue by trading two pearl necklaces for the property.  Today, with pearl cultivation, pearls are affordable to most everyone.

Pearls come in many colors and sizes.  The color, size and shape depend on the mussel that created the pearl.

cultured pearls are from Akoya oysters of Japan and China.  These are the classic small, white pearls.  This is one type of pearl most women will want in their collection.

Freshwater cultured pearls come in lighter colors, including pink, white, lavender, peach and other pastels.  These pearls are produced in China, and vary greatly in terms of value.  Usually these cost less than other types of pearls.

Gold Pearls are the most valuable type of pearl. Gold pearls belong to the South Sea Pearl Family, from Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.  These are the largest pearls and come in two main varieties.  White south sea pearls, and golden south sea pearls.
The black pearls from Tahiti are a dark exotic pearl.  These pearls are one of the most popular pearl varieties.

Out of these pearl varieties, the Golden Pearl is considered to be the most glamorous and expensive of all pearls.

In choosing your gold pearl, make sure it is a high luster gold pearl.  These will give you the most impact for your money.  Also, be careful that you don't purchased dyed golden pearls instead of genuine, natural-color golden south sea pearls.  These gold pearls are much more valuable.

In your search for gold pearls, just make sure to go to a reputable jeweler.  There are many great jewelry stores, both online and in your communities.
