In China, jade pendants have a long, rich history. The Chinese people wore jade to bring them good luck and to communicate with God. Jade protected people from evil forces. The Chinese belief in the power of jade was so strong that deceased emperors were buried in jade burial suits that they believed had mystical properties that could prevent the body from decaying. Today, the spiritual qualities of jade are still revered and people all over the world wear jade pendants in hope that the stones good luck will rub off on them.
Much of the styles of modern jade pendants are based on Chinese traditional imagery. The dragon is often carved of jade and worn around the neck. Unlike in western mythology where the dragon is seen as a destructive creature, in the orient the dragon is seen as honorable and life saving. The jade dragon pendant is given in celebration of a newborn healthy boy.
A jade Buddha is a popular jade pendant in China and the world over. Nearly every home in China has a statue or portrait of Buddha, the God of Mercy and the jade pendants are worn as lifesavers and to ward off evil spirits.
It is important when buying jade to make sure you are getting genuine nephrite or jadeite, which are the two types of jade. Write those down, nephrite and jadeite. The problem with buying jade is that other green stones look very similar such as green quartz or serpentine, and some people try to take advantage of that fact. The best way to guarantee you are buying genuine jade, is to do business with a reputable dealer that you can trust, and be sure to ask them what type of jade you are buying.
