Ring sizing scales are not uniform throughout the world. In North America, rings are sized according to a numerical scale that moves in increments of quarter sizes. Other countries use the same scale, but only rely on whole sizes, while others prefer to use an alphabetic scale. Understanding the sizing scales can help ensure you get a properly fitted ring.
Many jewelers determine the proper ring sizing by using a series of “sizers”. These items are essentially nothing more than steel rings that are sized incrementally. They are slipped over the finger of the person for whom the ring is created until the proper size is found.
Ring sizing can be a tricky process. A person’s finger can change in diameter from hour to hour and day to day depending on any number of factors ranging from diet to how much they are worked. Most experts recommend having the sizing done near the end of the day, as that is when fingers are normally at their largest.
