Watches are both a fashion statement as well as a functional timekeeping piece. They are available in many different designs and can range significantly in price. However, they are also one of the most commonly purchased pieces of jewelry in world, generating millions of dollars in revenues each year.

This history of watches date back several hundred years. The earliest examples were designed to slip into a person’s pocket, and were often highly decorated and artistic in design. Because they were often quite expensive, they were often considered a bit of a status symbol and it was rare that someone of a “lower” class would own one.

By comparison, today’s watches are vastly superior to those of antiquity. The advent of digital technology allowed for the electronic watch to become the style of choice during the latter part of the 20th century, as they were extremely accurate and very inexpensive to produce. However, in recent decades there has been a renewed interest in handmade mechanical timepieces, some of which can be exceptionally expensive.
